A five-bed, full-service Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is staffed by critical care nurses for complete post-op care. Complex and current pain management techniques that include nationally recognized standards of pain assessment, implementation and intervention are used to assure optimal patient comfort and satisfaction.

Peri-operative Testing and Education Center

The Peri-operative Testing and Education Center is staffed by registered nurses with advanced knowledge and skill in the assessment, preparation and management of surgical patients of all ages. The education is tailored to the individual patient and includes:

• Pre- and post-operative instructions following guidelines from the Anesthesia Department
• An overview of what to expect the day of surgery, and
• A realistic and appropriate plan of care concerning the surgical procedure, postoperative care needs and pain control that is developed by the RN with the patient, parent and/or significant other.

Same Day Surgery Unit

The Same Day Surgery Unit holds six beds (semi-private rooms) and is staffed by registered nurses experienced in ambulatory surgical care.  Services include pre- and post-operative surgical care of patients and pre- and post-operative education that includes individualized discharge instructions. Courtesy follow-up phone calls are made by a registered nurse after each visit to the NVMC Surgical Services Department.
